Plenty of places to stay in Redding. Take Cypress Ave exit and go left or right. You got 3 motel 6's in town along with every major motel brand. Take your pick. Redding is only 20 minutes from Whiskeytown and has 5 starbucks houses to get coffee in the morning.
The lake has 3 primry spots to focus on: the 299 bridge, the coldwater curtain, and the dam. You could either launch from Whiskey Creek or Oak Bottom but Whiskey Creek is the closest to the action while Oak Bottom has the fish cleaning station. Haven't been there this year yet but I assume the usual hard baits and softbaits will work. Get on the radio and ask around or stop by Strictly Fishing on Cypress and and ask what's up.
Good luck
