The state's kokanee are reared at the Silverado, Nimbus, and Friant Hatcheries. Available kokanee are therefore limited by the number of eggs collected each year and the number of surviving eggs that make it past the addling and sorting process. Whatever number of kokanee that do make it to the fry stage are divided and alloted to each lake cleared for kokanee stocking. The number of kokanee available are therefore limited and not readily available for purchase like trout or panfish. Also, the body of water on your property must be deep enough to sustain 55 degree water in the middle of summer and an ample amount of plankton, mysis, etc to sustain healthy kokanee. Even more important, this body of water must not allow any kokanee to escape into any nearby rivers or streams. The bunny huggers would have a field day if any kokanee were to escape.
