We Did it Again!
This past Friday, the PCHS one-act team won the region
competition for the fourth consecutive year with the play
“The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon-Marigolds”.
The entire cast received special recognition. Jenna Jones
was named region “Best Actress” for the third year, and
Allah Smilnak received the region’s “Best Supporting
Actress” award. Kinsey Hayes was named to the “All-Star
Cast” for the second year. Freshmen, Taryn Spires and
Kellyn Manders, were also recognized as members of the
“All-Star Cast”. One judge commented, “It has been a
long time since I have seen such a strong cast. I have never
given a perfect score in the 12 years I have been involved
with One-Act, but I couldn’t find any way to improve your
performance today!” The troupe will compete on the state
level this Saturday in Perry.
“The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon-Marigolds”
will be presented for the public Tuesday, November 10th and
Thursday, November 12th at 7:00 pm in the PCHS auditorium.
All tickets are $5.00. The play was written by Paul Zindel
in the 60’s. Based on Zindel's own childhood, “Gamma
Rays” is the Pulitzer Prize-winning play that started him
on the road to becoming a life-changing, genre-bending young
adult author. This drama explores all the love, pain, hope,
and bitterness that Zindel brought to his groundbreaking
novels. “This is an extremely difficult show for young
people, but my students do not back down from a challenge.
They work very hard to earn these awards and produce quality
theatre for this community. I am so proud of their
dedication and commitment,” states director, Angela
Manders.
The story takes place in an old, converted vegetable shop
that is more like a madhouse than a home for young Tillie
(Allah Smilnak). Tillie's mother, Beatrice (Jenna Jones), is
bitter and cruel, yet desperate for her daughters' love. Her
sister, Ruth (Kinsey Hayes), suffers from seizures and
craves attention. Nanny (Taryn Spires) is an ancient boarder
who silently witnesses the family’s destructive behavior.
In the midst of the chaos, Tillie struggles to keep her
focus and dreams alive. Tillie is keeper of rabbits, dreamer
of atoms, true believer in life, hope, and the effect of
gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigolds.
Ansley Parker is the assistant director for this show, and
her crew consists of Shelby House, Amelia Beaudry, Mark
Karle, Luke Manders, Caitlyn Harris, and Kellyn Manders, who
also makes an appearance as Tillie’s science fair
competition. Kelby Pearson and Kyle Gardner are the light
and sound technicians.
