REIDSVILLE — Nick Overton’s one-yard plunge on fourthand- goal with :00.6 remaining in the game rallied homestanding Tattnall County to a 26-21 victory over Brantley County here Friday night.
The Herons, who trailed 20-7 entering the fourth quarter, had taken a 21-20 lead on Ryan Blount’s 15-yard run with 4:05 remaining in the game. Tattnall County took the ensuing kick and drove for the game-winning score.
“That was a battle,” said Warriors’ head coach Jeff Kaiser.“This was to go home or go to
next week. That’s the first time in four years that we’ve won one of these.
“This is the first time we have had to win to get into the playoffs. It was an emotional game for the players, coaches and fans. We’re
proud of our seniors in that they get to go on and play again.” This was a winner-take-all
matchup for the fourth and final playoff seed out of Region 2-AA. Both teams entered with identical 6-3 overall marks and 4-3 region
records. “I’m proud of our guys coming back after being down by two touchdowns,” said Brantley County head coach Sean Pender.
“Our players fought hard and they deserved to win, but it came down to the last seconds of the game and we couldn’t get it done.
“It was an emotional game and our guys have come a long way from last year and I hope we continue
to improve next year. Devon Blankenship played a great game and he is a special player.”
Down by 13, the Herons started their comeback when Blankenship hit Seth Hendrix with a 19-yard
scoring pass with 8:32 remaining. The Battle Creek Warriors stormed through to block Ryan Middleton’s PAT.
Three minutes later, Brantley County got the point back plus one when the defensive unit came up big. After being denied a touchdown on fourth-and-goal from the two, the Herons’ defensive unit dropped Nick Overton in the end zone to close to within 20-15 with 5:10 remaining.
Charles Hutcherson returned the ensuing free kick to the Warriors 44. Brantley moved down the field and scored to take the lead on Ryan Blount’s 15-yard run. The pass for the two-point conversion and a three-point advantage fell incomplete.
“I tell you what,” said Kaiser,“I’m amazed at how much better they are than last year, with virtually the same kids. I mean they were young last year. That quarterback (Blankenship) is special, he’s real special. They’re just scrappy
kids and they will fight you and they need to be proud of that.”
The Herons took the opening kick and drove 75 yards in 11 plays to strike first. Blankenship
hit Jamison Williams on a 19-yard pass play with 7:15 showing on the clock and stun the Tattnall faithful.
Middleton’s PAT gave Brantley County a 7-0 lead.
Tattnall County returned the favor with a 75-yard drive of its own that was capped by an 11-yard scoring toss from Quaysean Davis to Chris Walker on a third down play with 2:42 remaining in the opening period. The run for the two-point conversion was stopped.
The score remained 7-6 until the first drive of the third quarter resulted in a touchdown by the Warriors.
Kareem Washington’s five-yard run with 9:49 left in the third quarter gave Tattnall County its first lead. Davis added the twopoint conversion for a 14-7 margin.
The Warriors took advantage of a mental lapse by Brantley County later in the period. A penalty for having to many men on the field on a fourth down punt kept a Tattnall County drive alive that would eventually end in a touchdown.
Davis and Walker hooked up for their second touchdown of the game, this time from 28 yards out, with 1:19 left in the third quarter for a 20-7 lead. The two-point conversion attempt was stopped once again.
Garrett Jackson’s interception in the fourth quarter set up Brantley’s first score of the period. After the touchdown, E.J. Thomas picked
off another errant toss by Davis that would directly tie into the safety.
