I think it's more plausible that the shark swam into the deep water deliberately to avoid some kind of underwater pest, one of which bit the tag off of it. Because, again, the tag immediately went right back to the surface and stayed there for days until it was passed.
Don't know what that would be, but given how close they found it to where they tagged it, its a fair bet that it was something native to the region, and by extension, something I'd have expected those idiot marine biologists who jumped straight to the "something huge at the shark" theory to have already been aware of.
