These same sort of 'transitional' teeth can be seen in various primitive, now extinct whales, like Basilosaurus, probably the closest 'real' creature to your fantasy 'serpentine' mammals. B. may have even sported a coat of fur much like seals. Some scientists have conjectured that some of the more reliable 'sea serpent' accounts may be a yet-t-be-discovered long necked seal of considerable size. This would be no more extraordinary than long necked plesiosaurs - another animal type evolving a similar succesful body design (converegent evolution).
