“And I just saved you from having your head blown off, so I’d say we’re even now.” He smirked even as Dax frowned. “But after that incident, Susan realized, perhaps intelligently, that the best way to protect herself from one dragon is with another. So she and I struck a bargain. She became my pet, and I protect her.”
“And you take that seriously?”
“Do I look like a human, to go back on my word without good reason? Susan has been a very good pet, and I will uphold my end. That includes letting her keep the means to defend herself when I can’t, especially since she doesn’t live with me. I know she won’t turn that gun on me. Just don’t give her any excuse to turn it on you.”
Dax scowled foully for a moment. Dragon-grade ammo in a mere handgun, right. The very idea of arming “pets” with any kind of weapon. It’s folly. But it’s his pet, he thought. He then tipped his large scaly head back and laughed. “Ha! Fair enough. This is your house, your property, after all. I had no intention of hurting your pets anyway.”
“Just make sure the others understand that.”
“I will.”

The women were eventually placated enough to fetch some food for the dragons. Together they pulled a couple of whole lambs out of the freezer, and defrosted them to body-temperature in the kitchen’s over-sized pulse oven in less than five minutes.
Susan was still on edge, fuming. “Seth should at least apologize!”
Val shook her head. “Hon, you’re still thinking of male dragons like they’re nothing more than really big human guys. They’re not. When they show ‘regretful behavior’ they will almost never verbalize it. They show it by laying an open hand on the other’s shoulder. He did that with you, didn’t he? In fact, he used both hands as I recall.”
“Yeah, but...”
“Let it go, hon. Please. It was probably a lot for Seth just to do that much, especially in front of Dax. Be happy with it.
Susan fumed for a few more minutes, eyes darting around the kitchen as she tried to move beyond her dark mood. “Why do you guys have so many lambs?” Susan asked after a while. “I thought Seth wasn’t fond of them.”
“They’re traditional holiday meal. I guess they sort of resemble a similar animal they had on their homeworld.”
Susan smirked. “So he is celebrating Christmas after all.”
“I think it’s really just another excuse to eat a little more,” Val said. “You know how dragons are.”
“Yeah. Wasn’t this all kind of expensive though?”
“Cost a few day’s pay. I think it was worth it though.”
They carried the first lamb into the living room, Val holding the forelegs, Susan the rear. The girls each took small steps, making sure they didn’t drop the heavy carcass. Both dragons had settled into seats, and by tradition, the women brought the food to the guest first. Dax grabbed the lamb around its midsection, easily lifting it high in the air to place the head down his throat. A few eager gulps later the lamb was completely gone. The girls looked at each other, amazed at how quickly he’d downed his meal. He must have been starving. They brought in another lamb for Seth, who was considerably more casual about his meal.
After the dragons had finished, Susan approached Seth. Tentatively, she lay an open hand on his broad, scaly shoulder. “Seth, I’m sorry too for the way I acted,” she said contritely, hugging him and kissing him warmly on his snout.
The big dragon grumbled contentedly at the continued contact, and wrapped his meaty hands around her waist. Susan thought at first that he was, surprisingly, hugging her back in a very human way. Instead, his claws hooked into the hem of her jeans and pulled them down along with her panties. He spun her around, his intent very clear with his member swelling up to full hardness.
“Dammit, Seth!” Susan admonished, wiggling away and pulling up her jeans and pants. “I’m not a piece of meat for you! I was just saying I was sorry!”
Seth looked startled at first, then grumbled mildly in frustration. Not too much, though. He had just been fed, which usually made for a very contented dragon. “You humans are so hard to understand. You act the exact same way when you want sex.”
“Can’t you tell the difference?”
Seth snorted. “The way you expected me to judge which of you had better breasts, when you two had that fight a week ago? Why should a dragon care? Those things will never feed my young, so why should I care of their size or shape? That’s one part of your body I’d rather not think of at all.”
Though dragons had no problems with the thought of eating humans and other creatures whole, the one thing that actually turned their stomachs was the thought of mammal lactation.
Susan rolled her eyes, catching a glimpse of Dax smirking at her comment. “Although I don’t conciliate with your master in misreading affection shown by humans," Dax said, now switching looks between both girls, "I am willing to concede that you lot have become more than just your parts however."
Susan looked over at Val, raising her brows wide. “I think he means that Seth loves us.”
"That is for your master to decide, child," said Dax, approximating a human-like grin.
Susan grumped at the guest dragon. “And you love being obtuse, don’t you? You could use plain language if you wanted.”
Dax gestured the grievance away. “No, I enjoy the knowledge that I speak better than most humans. Or, to put it another way, different prey require different hunting.”
It was an old dragon saying, basically meaning that one had to adapt to different circumstances depending upon the prey. Dax was extremely adept at putting humans at ease.
"Well, big guy," Val turned her head at Seth now, her tone indicated she already knew the answer, "are Susan and I more than just pieces of meat to you?"
Everyone looked over at Seth. "Yeah ... both of you are a good ####," he said matter-of-factly.
Dax gave a short, booming laugh.
Both women in turn slapped Seth on his broad arms, cursing in mock outrage, but much more playfully this time. He grabbed each of them gently and pulled them close to him until they settled down. It was his way of showing he was only joking around, approximating a human hug, even though it was not a natural dragon gesture. It had the desired effect, however; the women calmed, content just to hug him back warmly. Seth seemed bemused.
“So Dax,” Val asked, a little breathless after her little tiff with Seth. “What are you doing for the holidays, hon?”
“Going hungry, mostly.”
When he saw her perplexed look, he spread his hands outward expansively. “Yes, ‘hungry,’ child. These are the human holidays even our dragon brethren insist on celebrating nowadays, and I’m not entirely heartless. Besides, as you can see, I can do with losing a little weight.” He chuckled, patting his distended stomach.
"Jesus, Dax - are you still ..." said Val, pausing. Susan went wide-eyed.
"... Eating people?," Susan continued for Val. “How many?”
“Enough.” Dax said shortly, grinning satisfactorily, rubbing his clawed hand over his belly for effect. He laughed. “For the last two years, up until today, I’d survived by eating humans almost exclusively. I didn’t think it was possible, but with rationing and a little bit of luck, things worked out. Still, that lamb was much better than I thought it would be. Maybe I'm getting tired of human meat.”
“I would not blame you for that,” Seth said seriously. “There’s a nice thrill to eating a creature as dangerous as a human, but as far as actual taste — too many chemicals.”
Val’s eyes flickered half-closed as she regarded Dax. “Seth’s predation was mostly an addiction. Sounds to me like you’re a full blown junkie, Dax.”
Dax looked annoyed for a moment, a sibilant hiss escaping his sharp teeth. Then he sat back deep in his chair and heaved his broad shoulders in a sigh. “Well — I suppose it is possible to overdo even a good thing.”
“So who are your victims nowadays, mostly?” Val asked. She squirmed just slightly against Seth, feeling her weight against his belly and making him rumble subtly. Seth knew the wildest Val had ever gotten with him sexually was just after he’d fed on a human. He could tell, even despite his almost complete lack of expertise at human subtleties, that she was becoming a bit aroused at talking about it. “I bet it was mostly helpless little things you lured with your smooth-talking charm, huh? They probably thought the world of you right up until the minute you slid them down your throat.”
“Val!” Susan gasped, shocked to see her friend discuss such horrendous things so casually. Though Susan had been witness to dragon predatory carnage just four months before, and had almost been a victim of it herself, it was not something the three of them had talked a lot about.
“There have been a number like that, yes,” Dax admitted indifferently. “Human women who do not have a lot of contact with dragons tend to react to us like we’re just overly-large human males. If I am friendly with them and show them some monkeylike emotion, they expect a protector, especially if some flirting or sex is involved. It’s very easy to take advantage of that with the right type.”
“And what type is that?” Val asked. She scratched idly at Seth’s neck scales, making him rumble pleasantly. “We know you have sex with a lot of them before you eat them. You must have some preferences for which meals you stick yourself into beforehand.”
