Food Chain
The crowd at the shore stared up, paralyzed in awe. The roof of the mouth passed overhead, as the bottom jaw scooped up the crowd from the mud. People flew back into that fleshy cavern, rolling across the tongue. Some tried desperately to climb up the slick sides to escape, before the fanged may slammed shut about them. The great leviathan seemed to stare coldly down on the onlookers, before raising his huge head for a massive swallow.
The people of Old Town screamed, not just in horror, but in despair. They had hoped that this creature, awful as it was, would save them, but he saw them only as food. Truly, they wondered what might protect them.
The leviathan then simply strides over many of the people and buildings, momentarily spared only to be crushed flat by the reptile’s enormous, hanging, gut. As the gigantic predator approaches the croup of smaller crocodiles, they pause to look up, the wriggling limbs of their human prey still protruding from their jaws.
Most crocodiles are cannibalistic: readily feeding on smaller members of the species, and this leviathan was no exception. Like a bull croc raiding another’s nest, he reaches down to pick them up one, by one, depositing the rotund reptiles into his throat pouch. The humans still trapped in the jaws and throats of the crocodiles have a view of the reptiles squirming and rolling about; trying to escape out of the jaws with their short limbs. All light disappears as the massive croc raises his head, and his hugely bulging throat ripples as he swallows over a hundred tons of living crocodile and human flesh.
Inside the massive belly of the crocodile, the still surviving people of the City Center can hear the vast reptile thrashing about. Some have managed to grope and push past their fellow man to get closer to the throat flaps. Even though escape has proven to be impossible, the air is somewhat fresher, and they have survived longer than their fellows, digesting behind them. Suddenly, the muscular flaps of the throat begin to give way, success!
Instead of the expected burp or human victims, comes a swarm of angry forty foot crocodiles, some with flailing victims still clenched in their jaws. There in nowhere to evade as the multi-ton reptiles dive into the sea of flailing human bodies. They lash out with their jaws, snatching up more people, who can barely struggle before being swallowed alive, devoured twice in one day.
The massive crocodile lets out a satisfied, rumbling belch, and then turns his attention to the large building that the crocs were attacking. Unlike the smaller reptiles, the massive crocodile has no difficulty with this building. Massive neck muscles bulge out as he swings his armored head into, and through the building, destroying the upper stories in rock and gore.
The people of Old Town wail in horror as the great jaws creak open and begin to descend into the tightly packed people of the first floor. The head disappears inside, yet all can hear the loud, wet sounds, as the gigantic reptile roots around inside. Then, all can see him lift up his huge head, throat bulging under the weight of hundreds of people, limbs waiving pitifully between fangs, their wails audible for miles. Then the awesome jaws gape wide, and the vast throat ripples with a wet slurp sealing their doom. Over a hundred people wiped out as if they were no more than just a snack, and indeed, to the great crocodile, that is all they are.
He gazes down as the horror-struck residents of Old Town with a cold and calculating eye. They think to run, but are interrupted. A massive bellow rumbles across the ruins, and all eyes turn in that direction.
