Posted by Graham Carter on 30/12/2004, 6:46:18, in reply to "Customs duty on models when importing" Zef - I have been purchasing models from o/s for decades now and have never had to pay duty - nor do you pay the GSt or VAT payable by people in the countries you are buying from. The companies who deal in mail orders will always declare the contents and values on the package and this is checked by Customs on its arrival. I have heard of large orders ( in the region of $500 ) being charged import duty so keep the orders to a reasonable size. Also I would not order paints, glues and spray packs as the present terrorist situation would make the customs officers a bit edgy about packages containing potentially explosive materials. I would suggest you read the 'information' pages on the mail-order web sites as they will give you the info you need. Regards Graham Carter

: Hi All,
:
: I'm hoping some of you have had some
: experience ordering model kits from overseas
: and be able to offer some advice on customs
: duty.
:
: After searching the customs website and
: downloading the tariff schedule to work out
: the duty payable the entry I found which
: seems to apply to model kits indicated duty
: was free. I am referring to schedule 3,
: section 20, chapter 95, reference number
: 9503.20.00.

:
: Am I correct in classing model kits in this
: section? I understand GST would still be
: payable but I am just trying to determine if
: the duty tariff is indeed free.
:
: I greatly appreciate any help anyone is able
: to offer, especially those who have had
: experience in such dealings.
:
: Cheers!
