This week marks the 20th anniversary of the death of King Hussein of Jordan (7th February) after a long battle with renal cancer. He was 63 years old and had just returned from the USA after receiving last minute medical treatment which unfortunately failed to save his life. He had reigned for over 46 years, by far the longest reign in his country's brief history.
After a dramatic last minute switch in the succession initiated by the dying king, his eldest son succeeded as Abdullah II in place of his father's younger brother Prince Hassan who had been his designated heir for the previous 34 years.
I still recall vividly the dramatic turn of events in Jordan 2 decades ago this week. King Hussein still remains the most iconic figure in the brief history of Jordan as a sovereign nation.
