: Exactly so. And Dresden was not a military
: target. There were no weapon industries
: there. But it was one of the most beautful
: cities in the world. It was German culture,
: and therefore the British and the Americans
: felt a need to destroy it. It might have
: been as many as 253 000 people who got
: killed during this terror attack against
: this city. I have no problems with the
: bombings of Berlin, but Dresden was
: different.
How evil the British and the Americans were! The Germans would never have dreamed of destroying a city just for the sake of it, would they?
War brings out the worst in people. As the American civil war general, Sherman once said: "War is hell!"
Best not to start them in the first place, don't you think?
Back on topic:
The destruction of the Summer Palace by the British AND French armies (funny how the French involvement seems to get overlooked here, isn't it?) was indeed a tragedy but, as Gary points out, the knowledge of this event seems to be lacking in ordinary Chinese people except when the Chinese government chooses to remind them and make a public issue out of it. So their reaction towards it is suggestive not just of outraged victimhood but of a cynical decision to employ it as a weapon of diplomacy whenever the mood seems ripe!
