I may be wrong but I have only heard of one instance where the next in line of birth did not succeed and that was Prince Mohammed who declined the throne after King Feisal's assassination in 1975 because he did not consider himself suitable. The throne then passed to the next younger brother who became King Khaled and then in turn to Kings Fahd and Abdullah who were next in line of birth. Each was Crown Prince to his predecessor as the late Prince Sultan was to King Abdullah. Now the next in line, Prince Nayef becomes Crown Prince....and so on and so on. It seems that only when all the remaining sons of Abdul Aziz are dead will power pass to the next generation. We can only wonder how the new order of succession will proceed then?
