If it's real thin, it ismost likely genetic and usually goes along with a short sparse tail. It is a trait with some Appaloosas, but not as common with the modern breeding. If it's thick and sticking up, it may have been roached and is just growing out. Appaloosas are known for their good temperments and versatility. They are used for everything from halter to western pleasure, games and cattle work to show jumping and racing. You can read more at the Appaloosa Horse Club web site.
