I think it's very common to change the name of any animal when you buy it. If you're talking about their registered name, in the ApHC you can only change it if the horse has no registered foals, if it has no show or race points or merits, or if it has not been listed in a stud book. And it costs you $100 to make the change. BUt you can call your horse whatever you like. :)
