Posted by Jerry on 3/20/2006, 4:31 pm Just wondering if anyone can tell me if they know first hand, second hand, or anything at all about why my horse has started to founder but not all the way yet (no separation from the wall) and then within a week of this, his sheath swelled up ALOT and nothing the vet, the farrier nor I has done has taken the swelling down. The farrier came the mornig he started to walk differently and he is walking much better now, I have him stalled for the duration of the sheath issue. I took him off the shavings he is bedded with even tho' it is softwood and no hardwood, and put him on straw, (he has always been bedded with shavings, the same kind from the same place, but....) he has had prednisone, anti-inflammatorys, broad spectrum antibiotics, diuretics, pain killers, blood and kidney powder. It has been 2 weeks now and there is no change to the swelling which is now about the size of grapefruits and he also has a bit of swelling in front of the sheath ont he underside of his belly. Right in front of it for about 6 nches or so and tapers off. He is done the last of the medications tonight, have put him on severe diet as of a week ago. He is maybe 100 lbs?? overweight. Something like that. Heavy but not obese or anything. But the extra weight off of him would probably help his feet alot. ANybody know what might be causing this, but more importantly, how to help him and get rid of it?? Also, he is 13 year old appy 14.2 hh

Hi there,(may be long and I am sorry, but need help)
My other horse is issue free, but then could be individualistic issue too so won't affect him.
Thank you
