Try using allbreedpedigree.com, enter his name under "Horse" - there is information above in the circle about who owned him, etc. (maybe you tried to contact them, or not, but that is where I would start). It is easy in directoryassistance.com, or any directory. The pedigree website is so cool, you can almost find any breed of horse if it was registered, (mostly stallions) and some mares I found if they have a show record. Click on "Photos" and you will get all the "FAMILY"! I wanted to have some photos of a certain Grandsire and this was where I got it from. I have helped my friends find the pedigree for their horse who never got registered and they knew only the sire. They contacted the breeder/owner of the stud and found out thru their records who the dam was. The rest is history. Good luck!!
