Posted by Henry on September 3, 2007, 9:40 pm What I'm wondering is, do groups offer AAs the same kind of deals? Is it standard to do so? Because, if this is the standard, I'm going to work a 4 weekend shifts per month! Do the math: if I were to work a shift every weekend (say, every Sunday of the month), that would be an extra $4,000/month. $4,000/month X 12 months is $48,000; in other words, almost $50,000 more per year! If I was to sign on right out of AA school with a good private group for $150k/year, that would easily push my yearly income to $200,000/year. That's not even considering the extra hour or two of overtime I would be putting in during the week. So, for those of you who are currently AAs -- is it common to be offered a seriously inflated pay-rate to do weekend shifts?

Posted by ss on September 6, 2007, 9:10 pm, in reply to "Higher payment for weekend shifts?" 1) The things you see on gaswork.com you should take with a big grain of salt. Ask yourself why this group advertises there, especially if that ad stays there month after month. 2) If a place hires AA's, they will have the exact same job description and compensation as the CRNA's that are hired. We're all anesthetists - we do the same thing. If they have a weekend arrangement available, it's going to be available to everyone, not just the CRNA's, or not just the AA's. 3) If you want to become an AA strictly because of the money, as many of you seem to, you're going to be very unhappy with your career. You need to understand that anesthesiology is a profession, and that people in this profession are not 9-5 factory workers. Employers, at least the better ones, expect someone with some loyalty, some ambition, and a whole lot of initiative. If you've got to sit back and be told what to do, you're in the wrong spot. 4) There is absolutely no such thing as a "standard" when it comes to compensation packages. Each group or hospital is different, each has it's pluses and minuses. Some are straight salary, some are based on hours worked, some have shift differentials, some have weekend incentives, yada, yada, yada. Same thing with benefits packages - insurance, pension programs, vacation time, etc., all vary from place to place. Some groups are big, some are small, some are urban, some are rural, some just cover outpatient centers, some work mainly 7-3 M-F, others have staff in-house 24/7/365. Each and every one of those has a different way of compensating their employees based on what they think is important. There is no standard! Finally - regardless of your previous healthcare experience, whether AA or CRNA, you're starting at the bottom of the totem pole. NOBODY is going to give you the highest paying shift or the most difficult case or the primo of anything if you're just out of school. Period. Sure you're a professional, but you're the new kid, and until you prove yourself and until you step up and show that you actually belong there, you're like a fraternity pledge.

Posted by Henry on September 4, 2007, 3:09 pm, in reply to "Re: Higher payment for weekend shifts?" That sounds abusive; I think the job post I saw advertised something more humane, like 8 or 10 hours for the weekend shift. Then again, how much did your OB weekend shifts pay (if you don't mind my asking)? Was it in the $1k-2k range?

Posted by Dave J One was a flat rate of $1200 per 24 hour shift. Watch out for that kind as you know they would not offer so much if you did not work a lot. The other was $800 base and then $100 per hour for any work over 8 hours. The record was 20 hours of work out of 24, which gave a nice check but it totally wasted the next day. The third was I was paid an hourly wage as employee and each weekend day call counted as 24 hours. The payback would come in three weeks as you would work a Saturday, then a Sunday then a Friday call (16 hours) then get nine days off in a row without having to use your vacation time. That happened about every 12 weeks so basically you got 4 weeks more vacation than what was "official." Remember, if they can not pay you more money, they can always give you more time off to compensate. |
Posted by NeuroQueen Are you applying this cycle or are you still trying to figure out which route to take?

Posted by Henry on September 4, 2007, 8:52 pm, in reply to "Re: Higher payment for weekend shifts?" I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do. If I decide to go for dental school, then I might apply this May (most dental schools don't require a degree). I'm only in my second year of college, so if I decide to go the AA route (or maybe even medical school) and not dental school, then I'll have no choice but to wait until May of 2009 to apply. If that is the case, that sounds like a great deal. Is it rare to land a deal like that?
