Justin- You've gotta get your foot in the door. If you're really close to applying for a program, then I'd say its almost too late to get your foot in the door. If you're at that point, then just do as much shadowing as you can. However, if you're a ways away from applying, then look for jobs-anesthesia tech jobs, or ICU tech jobs, or orderly jobs-anything that will get you in the hospital-clinically speaking(you don't want to do housekeeping or food service and things of that sort- because there is NO patient exposure-and thats the key!). Then, when Anesthesia Tech jobs open up and post internally-you will be able to move into them. Thats what I did. I was an orderly first-then moved into another position in the OR, then moved into anesthesia...And Ive been with anesthesia for just over 3.5 years now. I work 40 hours a week, plus I usually get called in about 3 hours per week. So, thats about 8000 hours. It looks a little daunting, but thats because my job is one unique to only about 3 other hospitals in the country-so no anesthesia tech gets as much anesthesia exposure as I do-I guarantee it-(but don't let that discourage you). Total hospital hours-I wouldn't even be able to count it...But the fact of the matter is that Ive gotten my foot in the door through that orderly job, and have worked my way up. So, those are my suggestions-I hope they help! Let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you! and GOOD LUCK!
