From what was said by the PRESIDENT of the AANA at a recent meeting in California, the five CRNAs involved have surrendered their licenses to the Nevada State Board of Nursing. However she did not make it clear if they surrendered only their CRNA license, which was what they were working under as "anesthesia providers" at the clinics or they surrendered both their CRNA and RN licenses. (Nevada has a two license system.) I think perhaps a "plea bargain" was done. In lieu of criminal charges they may have surrendered their CRNA licenses and got to keep their RN licenses so at least they can still provide for their families. If the state had taken both licenses, they would have been back to nothing. If that was done, it would have cost them about $75,000 to $100,000 a year. They would also no longer be able to act as "independent providers" and would have to work under a supervised nursing arrangement. But at least they would still get to work doing something. What is also interesting is that there is very limited ways for a CRNA who goes out of practice for a few years to get their license back. Most states have little or no provision for advanced practice nurses to "drop out" for a while like there is for nursing. Depending upon final resolution of the issue, these ex CRNAs may never be able to get their licenses back.
