Meg, Stanley is winging it. 30 minutes is an arbitrary time set by the hospital UNLESS the hospital has an active OB department.

If they do OB, the requirement of NYCOG-ASA guidelines is 30 minutes "decision to incision."

Meaning from the time the OB doctor says you have to do a stat c-section you have to be making the cut 30 minutes or less from that point in time. Your travel time from home is INCLUDED in that time. So if you live too far away, there is no way you are going to meet the standard of care. That is why many hospitals with active OB departments have an anesthesia provider IN THE BUILDING with backup on call from home. In the military, they sometimes required you to take call on base so you did not have to fight city traffic when on call. You stayed in the BOQ or visiting officer housing so you would be close to the hospital but you could run around the base if you were not working.

If you do not have OB, you got much more time to respond and time set is arbitrary. I have seen it set as long as two hours in a place with no OB and the CRNA did not have to come to codes.

Before you go buy or rent, you should find out exactly what the requirements for call and how it is done. If you take call in the building, you can live pretty much anywhere you want because when you are off duty, you are off duty.
