Fact: A large percentage of MDAs and CRNAs are baby boomers, with many of them going to retire in the next 10-15 years. Fact: The MDA programs are not turning out enough MDAs to keep up with even current demand for new providers. Fact: The CRNA programs are not turning out enough CRNAs to keep up with even current demand for new providers. Fact: Neither the MDAs or CRNAs programs are graduating enough providers to handle even present needs let alone future needs with the upcoming retirements and the increased demand due to an aging population. Fact: The nursing shortage is so bad they are pushing two year nursing programs as hard as they can to get nurses out quickly. Fact: A large percentage of these two year nurses never go on to get their bachelors degree. Fact: There is not one CRNA program that will take an RN that does not have some sort of four year degree. Fact: The CRNA programs require a year or two of critical care experience of nurses before they get into the program. Fact: Due to the issues of nursing education and the requirements to get into a CRNA program, there is a lag between the increase in numbers of nurses and nurses even eligible to get into anesthesia school. Fact: We are headed for an anesthesia crisis in the USA and the two current "modalities" of MDA and CRNA are not going to be able to handle problem. Fact: For the same reason the military moved away from nurse practitioners to physician assistants, the civilian sector is moving away from the CRNA to the AA. For every CRNA you train, that is one less nurse on the floor taking care of patients. It is illogical to short NURSING to produce Anesthetists when there is an alternative. Yell, scream, kick and cry all you want, within 20 years you will see AAs in all 50 states. And I am one CRNA who would be more than happy to testify to my state legislature that AAs are needed. My concern is to provide safe anesthesia care to all who need it and I have no doubts AAs can do it.
