applying to AA school Archived Message

    Hi everyone,

I'm starting my senior year of college this fall so I'm in the process of figuring out what I want to do in the future.

It was always thought I wanted to work with eyes - become and ophthalmologist or optometrist and for the past 2 weeks I've been observing in a practice that has both. While I was sitting in on some cataract surgeries the doc suggested I go hang around with the anesthesiologist to observe the prep work. When I was observing her, I couldn't help but think how much more satisfying and interesting it was. She actually spent more than 10 minutes with the patient and had better one on one relationship. The clinical side of ophthalmology/optometry just seemed sort of boring and too "one patient after another".

The anesthesiologist suggested I look into AA programs since there was such a high demand for them. Since then I've done a lot of research and it really seems like a good fit for me. I just had a few questions though...

    1. It seems like the schools are random in who they accept. Not granting interviews to people with 3.5 GPAs and 30+ on the MCAT seems sort of weird since that's somewhat competitive on a med school level. What gives?

    2. Is age a factor? It seems like people in these programs are a little older and don't like to take many people directly from undergraduate. I'll be 23 when I graduate.

    3. I have a 3.48 GPA and 65-70% on GRE. Does this seem competitive? Do schools have a preference for MCAT or GRE? I guess I should mention i've worked a summer in a cell and molecular lab, worked as a student assistant in our Bio dept. for 2 years, and also as an undergraduate TA in one of our bio labs for 6 semesters.

I'm sorry to ramble, but I guess i'm sort of at a quarter life crisis to figure out what I want to do and get it right the first time. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
