I have a friend who is finishing up his fourth year as medical student in Nevada and he had to go through the scramble and make many, many calls to get an internship. So nothing is guaranteed in any field--even in medicine.
Flexibility is the name of the game---the more flexible you are with where you can work (in any field of endeavor), the better. As for my medical friend---he told me that anesthesiology is a hot field and there is such a shortage of anesthetist everywhere that many surgeries are cancelled because there aren't enough anesthetist there. During his Surgery rotation, he called me and told me of many times when he and the surgeon were ready in the surgery room to perform the surgery but had to cancel the surgeries because no anessthetist were available to perform pre-op and intra-op anesthesia procedures---which drove the surgeons nuts.
As LJ correctly pointed, one has to take it into their own hands to find the jobs. Once the people you know who didn't get a job yet start calling, they'll find jobs (hopefully they are flexible in where they can work). Also, they might be still studying to take the AA national exam or might have to pass it first. Can't get an AA job unless that exam is passed.
As we all know very well, no job just lands at your feet---no matter what your grades or background are.
