The reasoning behind the DNAP is twofold
1. Most other allied health professionals have a clinical doctorate as the terminal degree
Pharm D., Physical therapy, to name 2 so it felt that advanced practice nursing should as well.
2. The number of hours for an APN (a masters degree) has nearly as many credit hours as many of these clinical doctorates in some cases the masters has 6 credit hours difference so the thinking is we are already doing the work might as well get the credit.
The AANA is not "pushing" for the DNAP if anything we are real foot draggers in 2015 APN's are supposed to have the clinical doctorate to practice... except CRNA's 2025 hardly "pushing"
As for supervising or directing AA's I hope to god NEVER this is ultimately a corrupting position for both parties that has lead to horrible abuses by some and a huge amount of acrimony between CRNA's and anesthesiologists.
If you want to get paid for performing anesthesia then perform anesthesia.
And as for DAVE J I certainly could not speak for him.
