I am a somewhat neutral party to this conversation, and will add my observations and 2 cents worth of opinions. I am an Operating Room nurse with 11 years of OR experience. I have never worked with an AA, but have a lot of respect for their profession and their training and education. I trust that they are competent anesthesia providers. I have worked with LOTS of CRNAs, and would personally prefer to be taken care of by them over an MD Anesthesiologist any day! I have never seen a CRNA asleep during surgery, I have never seen a CRNA eating lunch with his feet up reading the Wall Street Journal during surgery, I have never seen a CRNA weight lifting during surgery, I have never seen a CRNA reach under the surgical drapes and squeeze a woman's breats during surgery. I have seen MDAs do all of these things. I have seen a few CRNAs that were not very good(IMO), but I have seen far more MDAs that were not very good. When CRNAs get into trouble, they call for help. When MDAs get into trouble, their arrogance and hubris, prevent them from calling for help, leading to bad results for their patients.
I find it ironic that CRNAs are treating the AA profession the same way that MDAs treat the CRNA profession. I also think that CRNAs are afraid that their over inflated incomes will be diminished if the market becomes saturated with AAs. Just my 2 cents....ok, it was 3 cents.
