Referring to the article posted about AA's in Maryland...

It is obvious in reading this article that the writer was very misinformed. For the record. Certified registered nurse anesthestists have been giving anesthesia safely for over 100 years. They can practice without an anesthesiologist in all but one state that I am aware of under the supervision of a surgeon who lets them do their job.
Second. Every study ever done that was credible shows that outcomes for CRNAs or anesthesioligigsts are the same and some would actually show the outcomes to be better. So much for them"fine tuning CRNAs practicing with old techniques".
Third. If you put an AAs curiculum beside a CRNAs the difference is laughable when it comes to training for patient care. The CRNA practices under a state license as a registered nurse and that is THE standard of care in the world. They have hands on experience in takeing care of the sickest of patients before they are accepted into anesthesia training. Their course structure and experience in anesthesia dwarf an AAs education in all ways, science included. They can take care of a patient alone before they enter CRNA school . An AA? can be admitted to school with a degree in finger painting!
Please feel free to research these points (and there are many more) but if you want to decrease operating room saftey and believe what the tottaly bogus article stated then by all means let them in but if you care about your family and yourself look harder. They are not cheaper then CRNAs except in experience and education and these are facts and not some made up attempt to feel good or sway opinion with unsubstantiated lies. If this comes to a vote in your legislature, state money would be better spent in other places and in ways to improve saftey. Stay with the proven winners as there is no reason to admit another marginally trained and inexperienced technician to your hospitals. Of course, if the anesthesiologist is outside the door holding their hand it might make you feel safe but what if an emergency occurs elsewhere and that anesthesiologist becomes unavailable. Are you willing to risk your familys life? Not me. A CRNA can practice without an anesthesiologist. An AA cannot! To suggest that an AA would improve saftey or standards anywhere is absolutely rediculous.
