Posted by Dave J One repeated fight I have with the agency is in regards to insurance. They are trying to "give me a break" by not charging me insurance for weekend days and holidays when I do not do any work. They feel that since I did not do any cases, I do not need insurance so why pay it? I insist on paying for the insurance for each day of the assignment even if I never go into the hospital. My argument is what if I get called and due to a phone or pager problem, never show up and the patient or family sues for my failure to show? Using the agency logic, since I did not pay for insurance for that day, they could turn around and say, "sorry, you had no coverage that day." Then I am totally screwed. Using my logic, I am covered as I did pay for insurance. I even have the agency statement showing I paid for insurance that day. Be pretty hard for them to deny coverage having taken my money. If you do locums, make sure you read the contract. If they are making any offer to "cut you a break" on something, start looking real close at WHY are they willing NOT to take your money.

I believe the agencies get about $10-$15 per hour for each hour actually worked. So a weekday is 8 hours minimum, the agency would get $120. Call is 1 hour more for the provider but the agency does not get anything for "call".
