Google has, at last, gotten into the car business. No, you’ll still have to take the wheel; the company’s self-driving vehicles aren’t ready yet. But its new Android Auto software will soon dominate the dashboard in millions of new cars.
Android Auto merges the driver’s Android phone with the car’s electronics, so a user can view Google’s navigation maps on the car’s touchscreen or play Internet music through the car’s audio system.
Why merge phones and cars? Because the phone has constant access to fresh information through its connection to the Internet. The navigation maps built into cars go stale over time; Google Maps never will. Besides, when your car is 10 years old, its electronics will be archaic. Plugging in the latest iPhone will amount to a brain transplant.
Also, phone-car integration saves money. Don’t spend hundreds on a navigation system; rely on free Google or Apple maps instead.
