She was a cantankerous, ornery thing, but so sweet. She was about 9 when my Dad bought her for me. I was 11. She was supposedly registered as a half Arabian (half Appy) but was formerly sold without papers. She was an abused horse. I am sure she frustrated her former owners who did not know how to handle her intelligence. The man that sold her was in a bit of trouble for neglecting her and dumped her cheap. Good for me!
Though she was always at the bottom of the pecking order among the other horses my dad and grandpa had together, she would chase off any horse that came close to me.
She had a lot of things about her that made her unique, that I could not possibly write about here as it is just too much. But I will never forget how she and the rest of the horses got loose one day. The other horses took off running. My dad and I were there together when it happened. I called to Sadie and she stopped following the rest of the horses and looked back at me, then moved forward to follow the others, then stopped and looked at me. She then stayed put so I could catch her. When I caught her, the other horses all stopped as though catching one meant catching all of them. It was a strange experience. She was a strange horse, but in all the best ways.
