Probably not, or rather, a new hobby...horseshoeing! I have reset lost shoes over the years and done minimal trims and resets to get by when my ferrier has been injured. Recently, since my mare Robby has been laid up with an injury and is only doing light work, I have been trimming her myself.
Last weekend I dug out an old pair of Equithotic "horse sneakers" that I held onto from Robby's endurance riding days and nailed them on her. I trimmed her paying attention to balance and bone alignment and held my breath as I nailed those thick shoes on.
Today my regular ferrier was out to do my other two horses. I don't ever shoe them since they are competing and Saba is very young. I don't want her messed up. Since Robby is laid up, she has been my test subject.
My ferrier critiqued my work on Robby and was actually quite impressed! He said I had her feet level and alligned well, and the shoes were set on correctly for breakover.
So I am my own ferrier now for one of my own horses. My back tells me it is just a hobby, however. Those guys do earn their money!
