Of all those farms that are having their babies now.........in January and February. You know, we have a nice comfortable old bank barn here at Whispering Hill........and without, a doubt, could probably make a couple of stalls nice and cozy for a winter foaling, but that isn't our problem. (And, Donna, with those lessons that you taught us about those cute little calvies.......I'm sure that it isn't too cold in the barn.)
But, without an indoor arena......we could actually have a mid January foal and end up weaning it before it ever got outside!!!! Yes, I know that's a little of an exageration, but not completely...... We've had many a spring where we had ice and/or snow drifts into April. And, if we don't have the ice and snow......then that means that we have tons of MUD.......not what you want a new baby running around in. That's for sure.
We live on a hill.......that's where we got the name Whispering Hill.....and in the summer and fall, it's absolutely beautiful. The pastures are nice and green many have natural springs running through which makes them ideal for mare turn out......but we also live in a little valley and are on the north side of the road so our snow and ice is the very last to leave (I believe that it is the last to leave in the county.).....And all that nice snow melt off....runs right down through the paddocks and pastures in front of the barn......which translates into lots of MUD.
So, I guess, that we will always end up with our babies coming when everyone else's foaling season seemed "all wrapped up"......but, I guess that is life here at our farm. The way it is and the way it will be. So, I'll just have to enjoy those January and February foals that others have.....even if I do enjoy them with a "hint" of jealousy.
Happy foaling season everyone.
