My boys live on pasture so can free exercise all they want. I do try to free lunge a few times a week just for the contact & manners aspect. I feed the same year round with the exception of an increase in volume if the winter weather causes weight loss. I've been showing one of my boys the last couple of years in SHIH & I don't do anything different to get him ready. Well I do give him a bath before we go to the show. 
But I don't change the feed program or ad an exercise program. Pretty laid back at my place.
