Posted by ShannonK I think you are right about the mare teaching the baby her bad habits. Do you have any kind of smaller area to keep them in after she has the baby to try to help prevent her from running too much. Maybe you could do some lunging for respect (Clinton Anderston) stuff with her while you're waiting for your baby to try and get her to behave better and like you more. Weaning early wouldn't be a bad idea either since you have a good gelding to put the baby with. They learn so much from the older ones which is why I'm now keeping all my young ones away from my husband's mare. She does too many bad things.

Goodness! So sorry you have to deal with a mare that is acting like that. That would drive me nuts. Did she act like this before she was bred or did you know her personality much before then? Lets pray the baby gets its daddy's personality. I have a couple that have learned the duck under the fence trick and once the learn that it seems there's not stopping them. But both of them are very easy to catch. Your mare sounds a lot like my husband's QH mare. I have tried for years to befriend this horse only for her to always treat me like dirt and won't let me catch her unless she's lame. She really rubs me the wrong way a lot of times but I must rub her the wrong way too or something.
