Our first 75 was at Renegade Rendezvous in Washington and if anyone is interested in doing Tevis, this would be a GREAT training ride! Camp is about 2000' elevation and there are at least 6 climbs to 4000' during the day, very hot ride, first 50 miles is a large loop out of camp and then two additional loops, a 10 and a 15 and let me tell you, that 15 mile loop was by far the toughest as it was in the heat of the day, and on a ridge right out in the sun! There were only 3 of us competing, a man, incidently training for Tevis and a lady who has over 8000 endurance miles and myself. I rode with Mona as she goes slower and Dean was prepared to move out pretty quickly. We walked alot of this ride, the views were fantastic, there was LOTS of grass growing all along the trail, lots of water stops (except on the 15) and Ash ate and drank better than he EVER has. Mona rides an Akel Teke/Arab cross who has less experience than Ash and less conditioning, so we probably rode a bit slower than I had planned. We walked ALL the hills and Ash was a little muscle sore at the end, but nothing I wouldn't have expected for his first 75. I got off and walked about 3.5 miles of the last loop to help him out, Mona and I finished at 9:30 and opted to tie for 2nd place. She's on a team and they were fantastic, stripping tack, taking my horse through the vet check for me, sponging him off, etc. I was feeling mighty spoiled! Ash received all A's throughout the day and at the end, his eyes stayed bright and he didn't look sucked up at the end, he also didn't stock up at all. I am very proud of him, he left camp and all the horses for the last 25 miles (twice) and that is a hard thing for the horses (and humans) to do!! He only had one point where he seemed to "hit the wall" and that was on the tough 15, so we found a shady/grassy spot and got off and let them eat and rest for about 15 min. I didn't drink enough during the day and got a bit dehydrated, threw up and had the runs during the night, it probably didn't help that the huge dinner after the ride was oysters/salmon and I had the ride manager save me some oysters and I ate them raw!! Might not do that again for awhile.
