They're calling it the biggest disaster since Hurricane Iniki (and that was a biggie). At least 6 people died and they were flying burn victims from Maui to Oahu, because we have the only burn center. Poor people.
Anyway, it was a shock for us, because we're not used the the kinds of wildfires that California or Australia get. (Or lots of other places in the world, I know.) What made it worse were some unreal winds (Hurricane Dora south of us, and some low/high pressure system combined.) They couldn't use helicopters to fight the fires for the first 24 hours because the winds were too strong to fly.
Mil's here with me now, and we were shocked at how the wind was howling and blowing everything around. It was stronger than when the Hurricane came by a week ago....that was nothing compared to this. We're all fine, though, thank goodness!
