I guess I sort of understand why they buried the lesbian content in the original film, even though at least 60% of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League were dykes (no surprise). What I don't understand is the out-cry now, when straight people are so incensed that "they tried to change something to fit our 'woke' culture." Give me a break -- what they did was bring to light something that was ALWAYS a part of the story, just left out of the original film!
Anyway, I'm not going to waste energy on ignorant people. I want to rave about the current series, which manages to include substantial story lines about POC -- which include Black and Latinx characters. (They don't include Asian, which irritates me as we are often the ones most often left out of the "POC" designations. I understand that historically there were no Asians in the league, but they managed to create a story line for the African American characters, even though they were very much left out of the white leagues.)
Still, the series has a writer/actor who's a lesbian, and it shows. Fantastic inclusivity, and it brilliantly portrays the kind of fear associated with being gay in that era. Episode 6 with Rosie O'Donnell as a bar owner shows the kind of police brutality gay people had to endure. Best of all, there are lots of lesbian portrayals, and even a taste of the old butch/femme dynamic. Go check it out. Praying so hard there will be a season 2!
