Axolotls are a kind of aquatic amphibian that are neotenic, meaning they retain their juvenile traits, and do not typically change into a terrestrial form like other salamanders. Unless under specific circumstances, such as poor tank conditions, they will keep their gills and live underwater their whole life. Axolotls have been used in various scientific fields for their regenerative abilities. If they lose a limb, or even part of their brain, they can regrow it. They're really interesting animals.
