Oh but talking about word play... I have not been "delighted" much lately, but I read about word play.
I read an article today that said that the bible never mentioned that Eve tempted Adam with an apple! And come to think of it, I believe that is true! I have not read the entire thing page for page, but I have read Genesis, and I have read about the fall.
And upon discovering this, I was like "What?! I feel like I have been lied to! I have always believed that."
So I did some reading and I discovered that in the West, the forbidden fruit was often depicted as an apple, but that it was probably because the Latin word for both "apple" and "evil" is malum. So the forbidden fruit, which the evil snake tempted them with, is depicted as an apple. And I just thought that was really interesting.
But the book doesn't say which fruit. It might have been a fig for all we know! I mean... if I believed in the story in genesis, which I don't. But we don't know what the writers of the text meant by it.
Funny how that works isn't it? The reasons so many of us think of the apple is because of a pun.
