It's like a math problem that evades me, that I think about again and again and again and I simply can't crack. And that's where Michael Moore comes in. He was among the very very few who warned in 2016 that Trump might win despite all the predictions in the press. He said:" I know my people, I'm from Michigan, I know how they think." In a recent interview with Seth Meyers that I watched yesterday he said that Trump didn't/couldn't really come after him with full force "...because let's face it, I'm his base, an angry white guy over 55 with a high school education." And the explicit aim of his docu "Fahrenheit 11/9" was to show "why". Why did this happen, why does it happen? He highlighted patterns, explained connections, made historical comparisons and also showed, in the case of his home town Flint, Michigan, how to flip a situation, how to change the popular point of view. He has an analytical prowess which goes beyond merely showing what is wrong. And that truly helped me understand.
I was beyond words when Hillary lost 4 years ago. It shook my world, not because it wasn't the result I had wished for (I can live with that), but because there was this giant balloon dancing in front of me, grinning at me and saying:" See, with all your education, with everything you consider knowledge, you have no clue whatsoever on how the world works, no clue whatsoever." I had friends who back then said: "Ah well, Clinton or Trump, that's like to be between a rock and a hard place, that's like pest or cholera." And I even have a friend, who just last week said the same thing about Trump and Biden to me. And this friend is educated and not stupid at all. After I went "Noooooooo...." and explained why I think this is NOTHING like pest and cholera, he somewhat agreed with me, but still.
There are probably at least 150 Million people living in the oldest democracy of the world who feel left out and forgotten and who yearn for a dictatorial strong man to change their fate. The biggest mistake Joe Biden can make in the next 4 years is to not see and hear them. Trump isn't/wasn't the cause. He is a symptom. Moore's docu helped me understand this.
