I should correct myself...
I wouldn't pretend like it doesn't exist. I do believe that in Annabelle it is mentioned that her stepmother used to beat her with a cane and throw her in the basement. Though I think that was when she was in her late teens. So for me, it is not unthinkable that I could mention it was a sad part of someone's life... but I don't want my characters to be like "Yeah, it happened to me and I'm fine." Because in these discussions there are always those people. "It happened to me. I am fine, so there is not problem." Or... "I think I know my own kid." The truth is, you have no way of knowing if a child will be negatively affected by that kind of treatment. It is not always something you can tell on the outside. I suppose what I mean to say is that although I as an adult enjoy spanking, and can even read non-consensual spanking in fiction, I just do not want to appear to normalise something that is still legal in many countries.
