Posted by David on 5/24/2005, 2:26 pm, in reply to "Paint Odor, Paint Fumes" I'm an environmental building inspector with 36 years' experience in building trades. Under optimum conditions (warm, dry weather and excellent ventilation), you can expect most paints to finish crosslinking and quit outgasing in about three weeks. I have seen rooms and houses that were closed up and not ventilated after being painted, that outgased for years. Many people experience health repurcussions from exposure to outgasing paint. I suspect that those who do not seem to experience health repurcussions are simply storing the toxins in their livers, nervous systems, kidneys, and so on, and if those body systems get overloaded at some point in the future, then there are problems. If you can't avoid exposure to paint fumes, every day you should spend at least five or ten minutes outside in a non-polluted place, breathing deeply; the oxygen will help. And eating fresh, organic fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates helps to give the body what it needs, to repair itself. It used to be said that latex based paints were safer than alkyd and other solvent based paints, but now it appears that virtually all paints are hazardous to human health, and that a respirator and/or excellent ventilation is needed whenever painting. Good luck
