**** PLEASE CROSS POST ****
We learned a few weeks ago that Warren, Michigan may be considering an ordinance that would target "pit bulls." Up until now, the city council has advised all interested parties that they were NOT considering this type of ordinance.
THEY LIED.
The city is, in fact, considering BSL, and it is on the city council's agenda TONIGHT. Anyone in and around WARREN, MICHIGAN, please make every effort to attend this meeting. We need people to attend and make solid, reasonable arguments against BSL.
You DO NOT need to be a pit bull owner to attend and/or make your voice heard against BSL. All you need to do is simply imagine being told that you had to give up your dog not for anything he did, but because of the way he LOOKED.
You do not need to be an owner of a targeted breed to know and understand that breed specific legislation is WRONG! Dogs are not born bad ... bad dogs are created by bad owners. In order to correct "problem dogs," you MUST correct "problem dog owners," and BSL does not do that. It is just that simple.
Incidentally, if you are not a member of a BSL group, I cannot emphasize strongly enough the power and strength of numbers. Our dogs need YOU to be their voice. I invite anyone and everyone to join my FightBSL group (http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/fightBSL/) -- but if not my group, please take part in the fight against breed specific legislation in some way. There is too much at stake to do nothing at all!
Regardless... we need people to come to the meeting tonight in Warren. PLEASE ATTEND IF YOU CAN!
The Warren City Council meeting is TONIGHT (June 23) at 8 p.m. in the Warren Community Center Auditorium, 5460 Arden Road.

From Diana McKay:
Just got the draft of the proposed ordinance from the City Clerk's office. Here's a brief rundown:

Mandatory spay/neuter of all pit bulls
Properly licensed and vaccinated
Muzzled and leashed when off owner's property (including sidewalks and public property). Leash strong enought that pit bull cannot break free.
Pit bull on an owner's property shall not be left alone or otherwise unattended outside of the house or home. Supervision must be by person at least 18 yrs. or older, or the pit bull cannot be left outside the home, in a garage, in a dog house or other structure, but rather must be left inside the owner's residential house or home.
Pit bulls prohibited on any business and/or commercial property in the city of Warren, excluding veterinary clinics and veterinary hospitals.
Pit bulls are prohibited in all city parks, including any city park designated as a "dog park" by the Director of Parks and Rec
Violation of this article shall be grounds for immediate confiscation and possible destruction of the pit bull. After confiscation, the procedure set forth in Section 7-143 shall apply.

=================================
A couple weeks ago, several pit bull advocates were told by council members that BSL was not a consideration in Warren. Turns out they were blowing smoke. I just got an anonymous tip that Warren's city attorney has in fact drafted a pit bull specific ordinance. No details whether there will be restrictions or a ban. First reading is noted on the city council agenda for TONIGHT.
Item #18 A
a) CONSIDERATION OF AN ORDINANCE amending Chapter 7, of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Warren, by adding Article VI, Sections 7-133 through 7-160, relating to Pit Bulls (first reading).

The next Warren City Council meeting is Tuesday, June 23 at 8 p.m. in the Warren Community Center Auditorium, 5460 Arden Road.
