the hunters i personally know shoot about 2-4 walkers for every one they feed, and some of the ones they feed are more trouble than they're worth. most of them are bred of night hunt champions. i don't hunt competition so only know what i'v been told, but it's my understanding that a fair number of good competition dogs are weak when it comes to putting meat up a tree & good meat dogs don't usually do well at competition.
you are absolutely right I don't know much about the airedale's current situation. the limit of my knowledge on hunter/breeders is that there are 4 serious on fur & two on birds.
as for IDing breedstock, before i figure that out i gotta learn how to tell which pup at 6 weeks is going to be the best w/ minimal training.
JMO, i don't think bigger numbers is better as long as you have a stable to slowly growing population of solid working breedstock owned by folks deeply dedicated to the breed & the work it does.
i just don't believe EVERYONE is out to get rich quick & prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt unless I know them well enough to say otherwise.
