when a breed becomes excessively popular @$$holes trying to cash in overbreed (including mixbreeding) and sell to anyone. a lot of idiots that shouldn't own a goldfish jump on the bandwagon & buy the current cool dog. then because they are idiots they do everything wrong and cause the dogs to become a pestilence & the breed gets a bad name. then it becomes the subject of BSL debate. it's whats been going on w/ pits for the last 2 decades, rotties in the late 80s & 90s, dobes & german sheperds in the 70s & late 60s and it happened to the airedale way back when.
a few things kept if from reaching the magnitude of the current pit issue.
smaller population (people), smaller percentage of people even owned dogs, smaller percentage of people lived beyond their means (a contributing factor in irresponsible pet owners) and the average person was less supportive of nanny state legislation.
