Like you boys over the years I have found many of the same happenings when dealing for hunting dogs among various Airedale breeders. They can get pretty creative when it comes to getting big bucks for a pup.
I have raised a few litters of pups in my day and it certainly is not an easily job. I do not expect to get a well bred hunting dog for nothing but I try my hardest not to get sucked in by some breeder's "Hokum". Mr. PT as another fellow that goes by the same name as in "Barnum" said "there is a sucker born every minute". In the dog world there are plenty of folks out there to be happy to part you with your money.
The only way to be assured in getting a top hunting dog is to buy one that is trained and that you can see perform ahead of time and know exactly what you are getting. Big money is in order because of the time work and breeding of a finished dog. When it comes to getting a first rate hunting dog pups are almost a sucker's bet. Some of these Airedale breeders are throwing around pup prices that could buy a finished dog from another breed. A person that would consider one of these dogs would have to be retarded. From a minor hunting breed like Airedales a pup would have to come from one heck of a bloodline and a proven hard hunting set of parents that actually produced a lot of game to make me even consider to part with anything close to $500. Also when I buy a dog it I consider that dog to be mine to do with as I see fit. I will have no part of some kind of conditions or contract. In my opinion most but not all breeders attempting to keep control over breeding is just way to keep the supply down and the demand high in order to get $1000 and up for their puppies.
