Yes, the historical setting is so vivid and brought back a lot of memories of areas that I grew up in or near. It is true, the novel brings "muck and mire" out graphically for those of us whose parents, more specifically grandparents, who came out of that era and more than likely immigrated from the many countries referred to in the novel. I am going to read it again -- but not soon.
