I don't agree with you on state championships (they are, definitionally, local meets), but I do agree that, in principle, a National championship should have qualifying totals. As this would cost some amount of attendance, the trade-off is that it adds prestige to the contest. For it to add prestige, though, the qualifying numbers need to be set at a decent, national-caliber level. Are we in a place to do that now? If qualifying numbers are set too low, that would be worse than no qualifying number at all. A compromise could be that any total at an ADAU or 100% Raw contest qualifies you for the nationals. Then there would be no first time lifters at the Nationals, which is probably right, buit there are still trade-offs.
