You'd probably never know it by looking at me now but long before the arthritis and knee surgeries, in my prime (around 26) I was one of the up an coming bodybuilders in the southern region. I was also and elite powerlifter. With only knee wraps and and old Marathon Supersuit, I totaled 1810 as a 220 pounder. Once as I sat on a bench recovering from a set of 600 pound squats for reps, one of the local "Gym Heroes" took notice of me and came over. His question to me was "what are you cycling". In my naievity I answered, "nothing, I'm not doing cardio until tommorrow". I had no idea that he assumed I was taking drugs.
After a long conversation I finally made him realize that I was natural and had never taken roids. He was amazed ! He gathered half the gym and they all came over to look at the freak.
His intent was to ridicule but what happened was that a lot guys started to ask me questions about nutrition and training. Most of these guys were on drugs and assumed that roids were the only way to go. Several of them stopped taking the steroids and started to train with me...Natural.
It's easy for most of us to say we wouldn't compete in the RAW UNITY MEET. It's easy because we can't. We are not nearly 300 pounds over an elite total...Gleb is, and he has done it without drugs or gear and everyone knows it. If he rolls into Florida and beats up on guys who are suspect just think of the impact that it might have on other young lifters who might say if Gleb can do it so can I. Think of what it might do for ADAU numbers.
I think we also need to keep sight of the fact that while all our points are valid, in the end this is a very competitive man. A man who is something that most of us are not, and that is capable of possibly beating the drug boys at their own game. I know from experience that can be a pretty gratifying feeling.
We are Raw and Drug free, yet many ADAU members occasionally test the waters elsewhere using gear. Gear is obviously the lesser of the two evils, but it's still not technically what we are about. But nobody seems to be very upset over those guys.
I think my position on the ADAU has been well documented. I love our organization and I don't believe we should change a thing! However Gleb may be able to do something for us right now that we can not do for ourselves. He can get us national recognition. And that alone may help us spread our brand of lifting outside the confines of the northeast corridor.
So I say again, good luck brother and give them hell.
