Very few lifters, even Masters, seem to care much about age factors,
sometimes used for determining Best Lifter Awards. But, since my
secondary interest in lifting (the first being ego) is to see how far older
guys can push things, I’ve been fussing around with age coefficients.
There is typically no competition at my age and weight. It’s not that
the competition is poor, it is literally nonexistent. I have had a grand
total of two (2!) competitors in 17 meets! So I try to compare myself
to others with some sort of formulation. Lifting unopposed means
that the Best Lifter Trophy is the only thing that represents any sort
of competition for me.
I have been the beneficiary of the McCullough Age Factors in AAU meets
in the past. Upon plotting them, it appeared to me that they overly favored
older guys, particularly ones in their sixties. So, as I posted several months
ago on here, I have developed new coefficients that reflect the differences
in current American and World Records in the ADAU, AAU, and 100% Raw.
I updated them today with the latest ADAU and 100% Raw American
and World Records. The AAU records website was not available.
As I expected, the difference in the abilities of older vs younger lifters
are not as great as the commonly used age factors would indicate.
I don't know how the ADAU picks Masters Best Lifters, but
using the AAU’s MAM (Masters Age Multipliers) to calculate AAU
Product Numbers (labeled "Score" below), I edged out Bugs Bayer
for Best Lifter in the Nationals; Creatura and Cruz were close behind.
......................Age...Wt........Total.......Schwartz..MAM....Score
Rich Hutchison ...68...162.3....1,000.00....0.6753....1.630..1,100.74
Bugs Bayer .......63...196.0....1,246.10....0.5897....1.470..1,080.19
Lenny Creatura ..51...210.5....1,500.00....0.5670....1.168....993.38
Ramon Cruz ......49...160.0....1,216.10....0.6822....1.132....939.13 (4th)
Ramon Cruz ......49...160.0....1,206.10....0.6822....1.132....931.41
But using my set of age factors, which I believe better reflect
the updated accomplishments of older guys, Bugs had the edge.
(My coefficients are in the RWH column.)
......................Age...Wt........Total.......Schwartz..RWH....Score
Rich Hutchison ...68...162.3....1,000.00....0.6753....1.465....989.10
Bugs Bayer .......63...196.0....1,246.10....0.5897....1.352....993.82
Lenny Creatura ..51...210.5....1,500.00....0.5670....1.142....971.60
Ramon Cruz ......49...160.0....1,216.10....0.6822....1.114....923.83
Ramon Cruz ......49...160.0....1,206.10....0.6822....1.114....916.24
All of which proves nothing, except that in my opinion
Bugs was the best Master lifter at the 2009 Nationals.
Oh, not to mention that I have too much time on my hands. ![]()
