For what it's worth - probably nothing - some unsolicited opinion . . . I hope some of the medical experts here will chime in on this, because they may violently but wisely disagree with it. I have absolutely no medical credentials whatsoever, but if I had lupus, I would be studying up on bacteria. If I couldn’t get a doctor to prescribe long term dosages of strong antibiotics, I think I might be breaking into pharmacies.
There are serious medical professionals who attribute lupus to bacteria, mycoplasma, or other infections. Similar notions exist with the likes of other non-specific autoimmune diseases and/or mysterious ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, etc. (Remember that it took our medical community forever to figure out that stomach ulcers are caused almost exclusively by bacteria.)
This is, of course, only my uneducated guess, but I suspect that when the details of the biological/chemical mechanisms are completely understood, it will be shown that it is impossible for a person’s immune system to attack its own normal body tissue.
I have only one personal anecdote; a good friend of mine who suffers from lupus has observed that she gets significant relief whenever she is taking antibiotics for other reasons.
